The first volume opened many musical doors for me. The idea was to shine a spotlight on the white southern singers of the late '60s and '70s who blended soul, country, blues, and rock into a lazy, hazy, laid-back, mellow groove. I knewe a few of the artists like Tony Joe White, Larry Jon Wilson and Dan Penn. But others were new to me and the whole disc is still one of my favorites. Too bad it never came out on vinyl.Compiled by Jeb Loy Nichols by the way.
Volume 2 is as good with tracks by some of the aforementioned plus Wayne Carson, Bonnie Bramlett, Travis Wammack and others. Absolute killer stuff!

Auf der zweiten Folge von "Country Got Soul" sind Songs von Interpreten zu hören, die unverdient meist im zweiten Glied standen. Weil sie entweder weiß waren (Dan Penn)oder andere Interpreten ihre Songs zu Ruhm verhalfen (Tony Joe White). Hier sind nun Titel zu hören, die aus der Zeit der späten 60er und frühen 70er stammen und musikalisch im Zwiespalt zwischen Soul und Country stehen. Schon der Opener "High Sherriff of Calhoun Parish" von Tony Joe White lohnt schon die Anschaffung dieser CD. Ein genialer Midtemposong mit akustischer Gitarre und Mundharmonika. Blue Eyed Soul gibt es von Bobby Gentry ("Fancy"), Southern Soul von Eddie Hinton und Donnie Fritts und einen (wenn auch mißglückten) Ausflug in den James Brown - Sound von Eric Quincy Tate. Des weiteren sind u.a. noch Townes Van Zandt oder Jim Ford zu hören, die das Album zu einem Muß für den aufgeschlossenen Country- bzw. Soulhörer machen." (Amazon Kunde)
