Demon
Vinyl not sealed, but unplayed.
This was actually recorded in 1972/1973 for Private Stock Records, but was only released on Demon in 1989. Private Stock released a similar record under the name and title of Jinx in 1972, but with a slightly different tracklisting.
Jinx got his name from being a baseball pitcher. Obviously his throws were jinxed and the name struck. He worked as a riverboat pilot and pushed up freight up the Mississippi, Ohio and Arkansas rivers. After being on the boat for a month he apparently had free time, got drunk and as the women loved his good-looking, rugged style he convinved them to marry him. Then he went back on the boat and never came back. Looks like he did this 4-5 times.
Riverboat Man was recorded by a bluesy swamp-rock oddball who sounded pretty similar to Tony Joe White and Larry Jon Wilson. This is a cool, kicked-back, swampy Southern album - kind of surprising it's so far off the radar... But that's the '70s for you! Hotshot superpicker Travis Wammack plays guitar (and banjo!) and that's always a treat. All songs are written by Mr. Alexander.
Jinx was killed when he was in his mid-thirties while walking acroos a highway to attend a Jerry Lee Lewis concert. He was struck by an eighteen wheeleer truck, which was ironic, because river boat men usually hated truck drivers.
