Many want to look back and find the feeling and sense of wonder that was in the air from 1965-1970 in a certain city by the bay and four masters have gotten together here and tried to capture something that some have believed to be long gone....Psychedelic guitar. This project is masterminded by Henry Kaiser, Harvey Mandel (Canned Heat) and Steve Kimock (Zero) and lap steel genius Freddie Roulette to help him make it all so weird and right.
From the classic "On Broadway" to a wonderful take on Syd era Pink Floyd ("Interstellar Overdrive") that would have the author dancing along at wherever place he is floating at now, this is older music re-done with todays equipment and a wider scope of imagination. This music remains faithful to another era but it's also been expanded to become bigger and better than ever before. "Up From The Skies" is a Jimi Hendrix number that Freddie had never heard before so he does indeed sing it in a fresh fashion and helps to re-invent Jimi's music into something else from what we have heard already.
All four of these players are GREAT lead guitarists and it isn't easy to tell just whom is playing what and I can live with that as we are only along for the ride here and it's pure enjoyment to hear this music explode all around you. I like it best when things get weird and tracks like "Sandy The Pelican" and "Skil Trik" are musicial explorations that have form but don't need boundaries to express their messages. Some discs of this type fail to hit the mark and sound a bit hollow as less than true to the form. This CD: "Psychedelic Guitar Circus" was created with brains and heart as these are the right guys to get the job done and on this disc they indeed make everything found herein play them (and us!) so well.
Be safe and wear your seatbelt when listening to this music!
